Steps to calories calculator

Turn a step count into calories, or find out how many steps a snack costs. Your height sets the step length, your weight sets the burn. Kalorea shows the same steps under every meal you log.

Why steps are a good way to count movement

Steps are the one activity almost everyone does every day, and your phone already counts them. Walking is easy on the body, so it's simple to add a few thousand more without planning a workout.

Step counts don't measure intensity. A brisk uphill walk burns more than the same steps around the office, so treat these numbers as an easy-pace estimate, not a lab measurement.

How many steps a day to lose weight

There's no magic number. 10,000 steps is a good habit, not a rule: for a 75 kg adult it adds roughly 321 kcal a day on top of resting burn. Weight loss comes from the total balance, so steps work best together with a calorie target.

Find yours with the calorie calculator, then let the app show how many steps each meal is worth.

Calories burned by steps and body weight

Extra calories at an easy walking pace, for a height of 175 cm (5 ft 9 in). A taller person covers more ground per step, so burns slightly more.

How it's calculated

Step length is about 0.415 × your height. At 175 cm that's 73 cm, so 1,000 steps cover about 0.73 km.

Walking time = distance ÷ 5.6 km/h, the easy pace the walking MET of 4.3 belongs to.

Calories = (4.3 − 1) × weight in kg × walking hours: the burn on top of resting. It's the same formula Kalorea uses to show how many steps a meal costs.

Example: 10,000 steps at 175 cm and 75 kg. Distance 10,000 × 0.726 m = 7.26 km, time 7.26 ÷ 5.6 = 1.3 hours, calories (4.3 − 1) × 75 × 1.3 = 321 kcal.
